VISA BULLETIN FOR SEPTEMBER 2008

A. STATUTORY NUMBERS

1. This bulletin summarizes the availability of immigrant numbers during September. Consular officers are required to report to the Department of State documentarily qualified applicants for numerically limited visas; the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services in the Department of Homeland Security reports applicants for adjustment of status. Allocations were made, to the extent possible under the numerical limitations, for the demand received by August 8th in the chronological order of the reported priority dates. If the demand could not be satisfied within the statutory or regulatory limits, the category or foreign state in which demand was excessive was deemed oversubscribed. The cut-off date for an oversubscribed category is the priority date of the first applicant who could not be reached within the numerical limits. Only applicants who have a priority date earlier than the cut-off date may be allotted a number. Immediately that it becomes necessary during the monthly allocation process to retrogress a cut-off date, supplemental requests for numbers will be honored only if the priority date falls within the new cut-off date.

Who needs help finding a caregiving job?

I know how hard it is to find good work these days. As long as you don't stick to just one Home Care company, you'll be fine. I remember naively depending on this one company to find me work... never again. It may take you weeks or more to actually get a shot at working! Go to at least 3 or 4 Home Care companies... I'll try to post some ads here to help you guys out.

If you know of a company that deserves to be mentioned in this blog, go ahead and let me know. I know a few, but I'm not too happy with them. :)

How Much Do Caregivers Make?

Well, I always thought caregivers made at least USD$10 an hour... I later found out that some agencies, and there's one in particular I'm not too fond of, gives caregivers a measly $7.50 an hour! If it doesn't sound too bad for you, that particular agency charges their clients $18/hour and up! I don't like counting other people's money, because that's their business, but when you take advantage of a hard working individual, then that's a different story.

A regular caregiver who is just starting out should at least make $9/hour. After your probationary period, you should start making $10 to $13 per hour. These rates are for live-out caregivers.

In many cases you're asked to live-in, where you won't be paid by the hour, but instead per stay. They make around $120 per day. It's a great deal since you don't have to worry about food and lodging.

Craigslist - Caregivers and Nurses

Craigslist seems like a great source for work. If you're a BSN graduate, you have a fairly good chance of getting hired by some of these finicky elderly people and their guardians. You will also get a higher rate almost always if you are hired outside of an agency.

Filipino Nurses and Caregivers

If you go here to the US and are a nurse trying to get a job while preparing for the exam, then most likely you'll be a caregiver first. You don't get paid very well, but at least it gets you by. A lot of the agencies try to maximize their earnings by giving you the least as possible. I know of one employer for instance that finds ways to deduct from someone's pay... may it be because of the insurance, the bond, or worker's compensation. You'll run into people like this, but thankfully, not everyone is as greedy.

Hopefully this site will bring you some knowledge on what it is to be a caregiver. I'll try to post links to caregiving and different agencies.
